After the Rise, humanity struggled to survive in a world suddenly harsh and unforgiving. They turned to various ideals in order to survive - some, to unity, others, to psychotic bloodlust, still others, to brutal pragmatism. In Nikephoros, they turned to strength. When the city of Vallation fell into darkness after the death of Erim, the first Commander of Nikephoros, Paul Jaden Rutherford, gathered around him the strongest people in the city. Some, like himself, were athletes, their muscles honed even before the Rise and now sharpened to a brutal edge. Others were the remnants of enforcers and criminals, dangerous men brought almost to the brink of insanity by the destruction of their homes and societies. Paul treated them all as equals. He was a harsh leader, but profoundly fair. During the day, they fought. He marked out an arena for them - there, they would settle all disagreements, every question of possession, every insult. In the arena, the Palestrae, they discovered more than strength. They discovered discipline, honor, surrender. They learned to admire the strong - and to protect the weak. When Paul was crippled in the Palestrae, rather than allow him to be disposed by the strongest challenger, his clan appointed him a Champion to settle disputes in his name. He appointed advisers, honored for their strength and their intelligence. His gladiators became honor-bound to support the family of any man or woman they killed in the Palestrae. Though never sympathetic, the warriors of Nikephoros became known for their strength - and their honor.
Today, the Nikephoros consider themselves the army of Vallation. The gladiators fight in the Palestrae not only to determine their position in the clan, but also to hone their skills. To kill a defeated opponent is not forbidden, but it is frowned upon - to kill a member of Nikephoros is to deprive the city of a defender, however weakened. They look down on Totum for its political machinations and openly despise both Than and Inferus for their dishonorable ways, but they would not hesitate for a moment to defend even their bitterest enemy from demons, should they Rise again.
Ares District: The outermost district of Nikephoros. Few make their homes here, for during the day it is filled to brim with gladiators and fighters from all three districts, there to fight for power and honor in the Palestrae.
Artemis District: The westernmost district of Nikephoros. Most civilians, hunters, and traders make their homes here.
Zeus District: The ruling district of Nikephoros, and the innermost district of Vallation. Located in the exact middle of the city, the warriors who reside here can rush to any outside border, and are always ready to defend the city against demon attacks.
